Summary: This is the town of Hapoli, the administrative centre at the southern end of the Apatani valley : It began to develop in the 1960s and by 1978, when this photograph was taken, had grown into a small town, with a bank, high school and complex of government offices : Few traditional houses are visible, however, since most Apatanis continued to live in villages in the centre of the valley : We can also see that the town is surrounded by paddy fields, which still dominated this spot but which were later covered with houses : the road, which begins in the foreground and turns to the left, connects the valley with Assam.
