Summary: |
This structure is an Apatani ritual hut used primarily during the Myoko festival : Each village has one or two huts, which are owned by different clans or clan groups : It is constructed of hardwood walls and a roof of bent bamboo covered with thatch : Here a temporary bamboo fence was been erected to prevent dangerous spirits from entering : the more permanent enclosure with stones, in front of it, has the same purpose : at the beginning of the Myoko festival, which lasts more than three weeks, two shamans crouch inside the hut and chant : When a leaf moves mysteriously inside the airless enclosure, it is a sign that the spirits have accepted a pig offered by humans and the festival proper may begin. |
