This Apatani funeral monument is a mixture of modern and traditional features : the structure of hardwood and bamboo poles, with mithun skulls on top, is traditional : the cement structure below it, with inscription, however, has been borrowed from Christian practice : Christianity did not come to the Apatani valley until the 1980s, but some Apatanis had earlier been exposed to the new religion in the state capital and towns in Assam. |
