Summary: This Apatani woman is weaving on her back porch, in this case to catch the warmth of the sun : She wears the large hoop earrings, necklaces, facial tattoos and nose plugs common at the time : the young child opposite her is holding a ball of cotton purchased from Nyishis, who grow cotton, with the thread running through and controlled by the woman's toes : Backstrap weaving, shown here, is the traditional method among Apatanis and is still practised : this backstrap method limits the width of any single woven piece, so that wide garments, such as shawls and skirts, require two or three pieces sewn together.
