Apatani man, inspecting the blade of his machete, is Padi Lalyang, a wealthy and influential man in his village of Reru : Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf befriended and relied on him for advice and help throughout his stay in the Apatani valley : Here he wears the typical hair knot, with brass skewer, string of metal beads on the hair line and small brass earrings, which hang from a cane ring : a small, sheathed knife also hangs from his neck : His pipe, with metal stem and metal bowl, was probably bartered from Nyishi or bought in Assam : apatanis also made pipes with cane and bamboo bowls : the young woman behind him wears the large hoop earrings, facial tattoos and nose plugs common at the time. |
