Summary: This photograph was probably taken in Bua or another Hill Miri settlement in the Kamla River valley : as we can see, these longhouses have porches, which extend the work and social space of the structure and enable people to warm themselves in the sun : as Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf also noted in his diary, Bua is built on a very steep slope, probably because no flatter ground was available near the only water source in the area : the landscape also forces people here to build smaller houses than they would on more level ground.
