Summary: These young Apatani men are playing with a bamboo pole cut and shaved to look like a penis the shavings on top are known, by a local euphemism, as the ‘vagina’, : this phallic play is part of a three-week long Apatani feast Murung (Feast of Merit), which involves mithun and cow sacrifice, and complex gift-giving between the feast sponsor and various kin and ceremonial friends : a week after the large animal sacrifice, the boys and some girls, and men of the feast sponsor's clan go on a procession : Dressed in ceremonial finery and brandishing their machetes, they walk through the entire Apatani valley only 8 kilometres long and 4 across, visiting all nine villages, and visit each ritual platform in each village : at every platform, they perform a simple dance, after which they are given pieces of meat, rice beer and rice powder to eat, by the local people : the bold ones prepare these bamboo poles and have fun, chasing after girls and teasing each other.
