Summary: On both sides of the central fence in this photograph, both in the village lane below and in the open space above, boys are being given food and drink by the residents of this village : these boys are part of a larger ritual procession led by a shaman during a large feast Murung (Feast of Merit), : Each year, several Apatani families celebrate this three-week long feast, involving mithun and cow sacrifice, and complex gift-giving between the feast sponsor and various kin and ceremonial friends : a week after the large animal sacrifice, the boys and men of the feast sponsor's clan go on a procession : Dressed in ceremonial finery and brandishing their machetes, they walk through the entire Apatani valley only 8 kilometres long and 4 across, visiting all nine villages, and circumambulating each ritual platform in each village : at each platform, they perform a simple dance, after which they are given pieces of meat, rice beer and rice powder to eat, by the local people : In this photograph, on the right side of the fence, a man facing front with head bent, with a plate full of meat is giving a piece to the small boy in front of him : to his left, others are serving the boys gathered below.
