These pieces of bamboo hidden in the undergrowth are a means of defence, known as panji : they were widely used by Nyishis and others in the eastern Himalayas to slow the progress of an enemy : a series of usually, fire-hardened, sharp and often poison-, tipped bamboo pieces are set up in the jungle, where the advancing enemy may not see them and injure themselves : Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf saw this panji while he and Capt : Davy led an expedition of Apatanis and Assam Rifles against a group of Nyishi settlements in the Kiyi River valley, to the west of the Apatani valley, in December 1944. |
