Summary: |
In late November 1944, Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf returned briefly to Assam in order to fly on a reconnaissance mission over the Subansiri region : Reaching the aerodrome at Lilabari or Likabari, near North Lakhimpur, in the morning, he flew in a two passenger plane, presumably arranged by the British Government of India, high over the area that he was planning to visit in the next few weeks as part of a punitive expedition against Nyishi clans : these Nyishis had been carrying out raids, seizing captives and stealing mithuns not only from Apatanis but also other Nyishis in the area : this photograph shows the Subansiri River as it meanders into the plains and joins the Brahmaputra River. |
