Summary: These porters are walking along the bunds in the paddy fields of the Apatani valley, probably leaving the valley during Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's trek to Assam in late November 1944 : Persuading Apatanis to work as porters was Fürer-Haimendorf's constant struggle, as he only slowly appreciated that they considered such wage labour undignified : they were generally paid 1 rupee for each day's work : Refusal to work as porters brought punishments, fines and threats to burn down granaries.
