Summary: This Apatani ritual structure, with bamboo roof and hardwood front and back walls, is a ritual hut called a nago : a village has two, three or four such huts, each of which belongs to a clan or a group of clans : this small hut is the centre of ritual activity during key events of the Myoko festival and during a ritual to placate the soul of the victim of a violent death : as this photograph also shows, Apatanis live in narrow houses approx : 12 x 4 metres, and compact villages in order to use every square metre of land for wet-rice agriculture.
