Summary: |
When the leading men of Dutta and Hija villages came to Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's house to recount their grievances against a Nyishi village and clan Licha, they brought a number of these small bamboo pieces kotiir, : Using them to enumerate cases of Nyishi injustice, they laid them out on the two longer poles: one for each mithun stolen, debt unpaid, hostage held and so on : In this instance, 120 sticks were used, to represent as many of the enemy’s crimes : this traditional form of counting is still used on occasion, when large numbers are involved. |
