These Apatani men are using wooden-handled and metal-tipped hoes to turn the soil in a paddy field : these valued tools, one of the very few used by Apatanis in wet-rice cultivation, came mostly from Assam, although some were made by Apatani blacksmiths from iron brought up from Assam : this is one of the high-lying fields in which the soil hardens and must be loosened with the hoe, prior to flooding in April or May. |
