Summary: |
Hut-like structure in the foreground is used for Apatani rituals : While the ritual platform, on which the men are standing, belongs to one clan, this smaller structure is owned by a group of clans : It is constructed with hardwood pieces for walls and bent bamboo on the roof : Hardwood pieces decorated with x's drawn in a mixture of soot and oil are placed on top : In front, encircled by a hardwood fence, is a sapling of a special tree, which is planted during the Myoko festival : this enclosure is intended to prevent harmful spirits from entering the hut : the festival officially begins when a shaman sits inside the hut and chants until a leaf, stuck inside a monkey skull, moves in the airless space : this is seen as a sign that the spirits have accepted the gifts made by humans. |
