Summary: This mithun (bos frontalis) is tethered to a post, prior to sacrifice as part of a Nyishi ritual. In addition to providing meat, mithuns, which some Nyishis owned in large numbers in this part of the Subansiri region, were also used to pay debts, purchase land and negotiate marriage settlements. The houses nearby are relatively small and recent, as indicated by the lack of thatch on the roof. Like most houses in the region, they were built primarily with bamboo but also hardwood poles and posts, and flattened bamboo on the roof. This scene is probably in the Nyishi village of Jorum, not far from the Apatani valley. A conical structure of bamboo, marking a man's grave, stands in the middle distance.
