These Apatanis are working in the paddy fields : Some are using their feet to make the muddy texture into which seedlings will be transplanted : the boy in the centre is pulling a wooden tray, on to which a woman centre, foreground, is pushing earth : these trays are used to shift earth from a higher paddy field to a lower one : apatanis practice wet-rice cultivation using only a few tools, such as these trays, and without animals, machines or wells : Paddy plots are owned by families, who tend them throughout the year, although some of the labour is done by groups : Many of these groups are informal, voluntary arrangements between eight to ten people, mostly women, who work in each other’s fields on a rotating basis : today, we rarely see men working in the paddy fields in this traditional arrangement : Increasingly, groups consist of young men who work for wages during the heavy periods of the agricultural season in the summer months : a few individual men and women, of all ages, also do paid labour throughout the year. |
