This bamboo structure, built by the owner of the house to which it is attached, was intended to prevent the escape of a prisoner held within the house : the tall platform, as Fürer-Haimendorf explained, is a ‘sentry box.’ The prisoner was the man’s own son-in-law : the younger man had reportedly badly treated his wife and tried to send her back to her father’s house : When the son-in-law went to his father-in-law’s house and demanded that he take back his daughter, the older man seized him and kept him prisoner in his house : When this photograph was taken, the prisoner had been held for seven months : the father-in-law demanded either that he take back his wife or pay him 100 mithuns a ridiculously high number. |
