The expedition, for which Livingstone was awarded a Royal Geographical Society gold medal, covered 4,300 miles from coast to coast. Livingstone’s account of this journey, in Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857) became a best-seller that established his reputation and helped determine Victorian views of the interior of Africa. -- The map is thought to have been used as backing for a new map of the area that Livingstone drew while on the expedition (also illustrated). In May 1941, both maps were badly damaged when a bomb hit Livingstone House. (Text by Tom Tomlinson, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.)
