Howard in his role as Associate Secretary of the American Baptists Foreign Missionary Society by the Burma Theological Society in 1937. The trip marked a return to the country after 15 years spent teaching at Judson College, named in honour of the first American Baptist missionary, Adoniram Judson (1788-1850). The tube, specially made to hold a written message, is variously called kyi-dauk or sa-dauk, the latter translated as ‘letter tube’. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.)
