The inner central panel contains an oval scalloped medallion, with pendants, of black leather. Within the medallion are intertwining arabesques interspersed with fleur de lys radiating from a central point on a ground covered with small gold punched dots. The densely hatched tooled lines, common on eighteenth-century Ottoman bindings, create a sense of depth. French influence on the emergent Turkish rococo style may be detected in the fleur de lys, as it was during the reign of Ahmed III that they are found in architecture and the arts of the book. The flap has a roundel at its centre that mirrors the design of the cover. The doublures are of yellow paper sprinkled with blue (Text by Alison Ohta, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
