But passing by a village he noticed some fat fowls, and his appetite was aroused. -- A jackal warned the fox that he would not be able to evade the guardian, and that it would be better for him to be contented with the piece of skin. The fox would not listen: he put down the skin and launched himself towards the fowls. But the guardian threw his stick at him, striking him on the foot. As he limped back, the fox consoled himself with the thought of the skin, only to find it gone. Lamenting his loss, he caught sight of a kite carrying off the piece of skin, and, overwhelmed by disappointment, struck his head against the ground and died. -- The miniature shows the moment in which the fox looks up to see the kite flying away with the piece of skin.
