Representing new heights of sophistication and elegance in colour printing, the pages were printed from single blocks to which different coloured inks were applied. Hand-stamped seals add a touch of vermilion to some pages. The Percival David Foundation has two copies of this famous work, an incomplete set of seven volumes dated 1606 (illustrated here), and a somewhat later complete set, without colour. (Text by John T. Carpenter and Yoshiko Yasumura, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
