It depicts Robert Morrison and his assistants engaged in translating the entire Bible into Chinese, which they completed in 1819. The painting was commissioned by members of the British East India Company Factory at Canton as a tribute to Morrison (Text by Susannah Rayner, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
