Four great world religions trace their origin to South Asia, and others have come to it, so that it is no surprise to find there some of the world's finest religious architecture and sculpture. But it also has rich traditions of painting, arts of the book, textiles and crafts, and it is these that are represented here. -- They range from Tibetan Buddhist texts and thangkas to Kashmiri miniatures of Visnu and Krsna, from metalwork from Eastern India to Mughal manuscripts; and from a Qur)an from Northern India to South India Company paintings. All demonstrate the depth and diversity of South Asian literary and visual culture, and its artistic engagement with both deep-rooted regional and religious traditions as well as with the wider world – be it Islamic Persia or colonial Britain.
