A closely related piece is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing. The eye-catching design playfully juxtaposes unusually shaped garden rocks with disproportionately large spring blossoms. The doucai ('contrasting colours') technique involved two firings: for the first, the cobalt outlines of the design were drawn and the entire surface covered with a colourless glaze; for the second, at a lower temperature, the outlines were filled with lead-fluxed overglaze enamels. The combination was perfected at the Jingdezhen Imperial kilns during the reign of the Chenghua emperor, whose six-character reign mark is inscribed in underglaze blue on the foot.
