520 | 2 | |a This small but generously proportioned globular jar from the later years of the Chenghua reign is decorated in underglaze blue outlines with brilliant overglaze washes of green, yellow, aubergine and red. A closely related piece is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing. The eye-catching design playfully juxtaposes unusually shaped garden rocks with disproportionately large spring blossoms. The doucai ('contrasting colours') technique involved two firings: for the first, the cobalt outlines of the design were drawn and the entire surface covered with a colourless glaze; for the second, at a lower temperature, the outlines were filled with lead-fluxed overglaze enamels. The combination was perfected at the Jingdezhen Imperial kilns during the reign of the Chenghua emperor, whose six-character reign mark is inscribed in underglaze blue on the foot.
