A man wearing part of an obsolete type of rawhide armour. It consists of a broad piece of hide laced round the body to protect the chest and abdomen from spear and dao wounds, and greaves or leggings which a panji would not easily penetrate. Panjis, or sharpened bamboo spikes, are planted upright along paths between villages at war, and can inflict terrible wounds on the unwary who fail to detect them. The arm-guards and helmet, made from the skin of a bull's hump, are missing from this armour; the man wears a woven cane hat instead. He carries a dao and spear. |
