They were probably the best examples of Naga stonework in the Naga Hills at that time, being of dry-stone construction, with sitting platforms on the top. Hutton warned the villagers, however, that the forts would be demolished if they were again used as bases for rebellion against the British. Memories were still green of the Angami rising of 1879, when a British column had been ambushed by warriors from Khonoma, killing many of them. The British garrison at Kohima was then besieged for thirteen days until relieved by a force from Manipur.
