Chantongia is a village of the Chongli group. These posts commemorate a man's third mithun sacrifice, thus completing the complete series of sacrifices and entitling him to display the status he has gained by means of the ornamentation of his house and the dress of himself and his family. The posts are carved to represent hornbill tail feathers, symbols of wealth. The incised carving appears identical to the chest tattoo of the Chang head-hunter. |
