Gaonbura of Oting (Image number C.007, J.P. Mills Photographic Collection)

A Gaonbura is a Government appointed headman. In recognition of the fact, they are given a red cloth - which he is carrying across his shoulder. He wears ear ornaments made of long hair.

500 |a The image is part of Album C. The first part of this Album contains photographs taken when Mills was touring with J.H. Hutton in the Konyak country in October 1923. Album B. also contains some photographs taken on this tour. At the time Mills was Assistant Commissioner, based at Mokokchung, and Hutton was Deputy Commissioner at Kohima. The latter part of the Album consists of photographs from other areas. These cannot be dated, but were probably taken at about the same period.
