The Australia Japan Container Line (AJCL) was formed in August 1968 by Overseas Container Lines (OCL) with Australia West Pacific Line (AWPL) and Associate Container Transportation Limited (a combination of Blue Star, Port Line and Ellerman). The Australia Japan Container Line (AJCL) commenced containerized freight services from 1970, between Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane in Australia – and Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, and Yokkaichi in Japan. The new weekly service was operated jointly under a slot-sharing agreement with the three Japanese operators Mitsui-OSK, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Yamashita-Shinnihon Line (YSL). This service started with five containerships, of which AJCL operated the MV Arafura and MV Ariake – each with a capacity of 1140 TEU (20ft equivalent units) including integral refrigerated containers and dry/general cargo containers. AJCL’s trading rights flowed from the conventional shipping services run before that time by the British companies P&O Group (as Eastern and Australian Shipping), the Swire Group (as China Navigation Co) – and Swedish company Australia West Pacific Line (AWPL). The AJCL board represented these three co-owners, with management delegated to the Australian subsidiary of Overseas Containers Ltd (OCL) of which P&O was a part-owner. |
