scb_admin_history Harper Gilfillan & Co. came into being following a merger between Adamson, Gilfillan & Co (whose principal objectives were to handle the export of Eastern produce and to import goods from the West) and A C Harper & Co, later changing its name in March 1930 to Harper Gilfillan & Co. A C Harper had been started in about 1886 by Archie Harper, a trader in Selangor, and later agent for the Straits Steamship Co. In 1976 it changed its name to Sharikat Harper Gilfillan Bhd, and went on to substantially diversify its operations and geographic spread. In 1976 Swire took a 30% shareholding in Blyth Greene Jourdian, a Mauritus-centred firm whose business included the Malaysian Company Sharikat Harper Gilfillan. In 1979 full ownership was acquired.
