Summary: |
Accounts for Butterfield & Swire for the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries can be found entered within the main John Swire and Sons Accounts Books made up in London (see JSSI 7) but only one separate series of House Accounts from the East has survived covering the years 1936-45. The accounts sheets sent to London from Hong Kong and Shanghai vary in content but generally cover most expenditures and earnings of Butterfield & Swire in Hong Kong, Shanghai and outports in China and Japan, including commissions earned from other John Swire & Sons firms for whom they acted as agents. |
