scb_admin_history One of the first dockyards to establish itsled in Hong Kong was the Hong Konag and Whampoa Dock Company. The company grew to become the largest shipyard and in 1866 had the distinction of becoming Hong Kong's first registered company. In 1908, John Swire & sons opened the Taikoo Dockyard & Engineering company, further strengthening Hong Kong's role as one of the leading shipbuilding and shiprepair centres of the region. Hongkong United Dockyards Ltd [HUD] was established in 1972 by the merger of the marine and engineering interests of these two companies. The two dockyards’ fleets were merged under Hongkong Salvage & Towage [HKST]. Today this joint venture integrates the extensive dockyard expertise and traditions of the two companies to provide multi-disciplinary marine services and engineering solutions in Asia.
