Summary: Original held by Essex Record Office, D/DMb B2 Log book of Captain H.E. Laver [of Colchester], Master of the S.S. Kalgan of the China Navigation Company Ltd. S.S. Kalgan was built in 1894 by Messrs. Scott and Company of Greenock, Scotland, and was trading along the whole length of the China coast, from Tientsin to Hong Kong, before it was chartered by the Admiralty in June 1917. Apart from navigational and cargo information, the log also contains personal and general comments (e.g. vaccinations, family news, activites on leave in harbour, observations on Hong Kong reservoir, fishing methods); there is a reference to rumours of a German raider on 26 March, and on the 27 March to the reactions of the Russian Postmaster at Chefoo in the early stages of the Russian Revolution - 'says he is going to take down the coat of arms over the Post Office in the course of a day or two'.
