Letters are candid, often humourous, detailing characters (and flaws!) of staff and their suitability for roles as Taipan, no.1 or no.2. Letters discuss pay due to female staff and cost of living, 3 Apr 1936; styling of the house 'Hazelwood', vol 2 21 Feb 1936; instances of the use of Swire Code; 29 Jan 1935 comments on 'philanthropy' etc; Copy of The Cost of Living Index Number, 1932; How to live on £50 a month', Dec 1932; regular references to smuggling and piracy, including 29 Mar 1935, re suggestion to approach Dhu Yu Sing, 'King of the underworld, to appoint an anti-piracy Comoradore; Chiang Kai Shek's arrival in Szechwan, 29 Mar 1935
