Admin history: (Benares, Baranas, a district, a town, a city of pilgrimage for Hindus) In 1867, zenana visiting was started at the request of CMS. In 1887, Dr Mary Pailthorpe opened Victoria Hospital and dispensary in temporary accommodation, a permanent building being opened in 1889. The hospital had to close in 1920 because of the difficulty in securing staff.
