(Benares, Baranas, a district, a town, a city of pilgrimage for Hindus) In 1867, zenana visiting was started at the request of CMS. In 1887, Dr Mary Pailthorpe opened Victoria Hospital and dispensary in temporary accommodation, a permanent building being opened in 1889. The hospital had to close in 1920 because of the difficulty in securing staff. Two schools were built and three more were taken over from the London Missionary Society who had to close down their work in Varanasi. By December 1929, work was progressing with the Benares United City Mission amongst students and other visitors to the Colleges and Shrines. ZBMM was a co-operating partner. |
