scb_admin_history The father of Mary Anne and Emma Foulger, John Foulger, was a London merchant and a Director of the London Missionary Society. Mary Anne married Dr Ebenezer Pye Smith, son of Dr Pye Smith of Homerton College. Dr Ebenezer was also a Director of the LMS. Emma married John Fletcher, a shipbuilder of Union Dock, Limehouse. He acted in an advisory capacity to the Committee that selected the ship Camden for John Williams, in 1838. Emma was his second wife. Eliza Philip was the daughter of Dr John Philip. She married Mr Fairbairn, editor of the Cape Advetizer. She died in 1840.
scb_custodial_history The originals of the letters are in the hands of the Fairbarin family in Cape Town, and were loaned to Miss Una Long, of Grahamstown University, who copied them out. Letter adhered to inside cover of volume addressed to Irene Fletcher, London Missionary Society Librarian & Archivist, 3 Feb 1952, gives additional context re the Pye Smith family.
