Kathleen [Catherine] Deuchar worked at the headquarters of the London Missionary Society where she acted as an assistant to Dr Wardlaw Thompson, and later to F. H. Hawkins. She accompanied the 1924 Deputation to Africa at her own expense, and in that capacity paid a visit to Mbereshi in Northern Rhodesia, where she stayed at the Livingstone Memorial Girls' Boarding School. She became interested in the work of the School, and formed a close friendship with its headmistress Miss Mabel Shaw. Miss Deuchar died on 1 August 1927. In memory of her work with the Society, her only surviving sister decided to endow a chapel at Mbereshi, in connection with the Livingstone Memorial Girls' Boarding School. The Chapel was opened on Whit Sunday, 1932. The building was made by local workmen under the direction of the local Secretary for the LMS. |
