Born Mar 28 1858, at Edinburgh; studied at Rotherham College; appointed to the Central Africa Mission; ordained 5 May 1887; left England 11 May 1887; settled at Fwambo, 21 Sep; Mar 1888, went to Kavala Island and afterwards settled at Niamkolo; 1890 returned to England on sick leave; Dec 1893, resigned connection with London Missionary Society. Between 1894 and 1902 he was connected with the African Lakes Corporation and subsequently accepted a position in the British South African Company's service; re-entered the service of the London Missionary Society in 1902 and sailed for Central Africa 30 Apr; 1906, transferred to Niamkolo; retired from service 1916; 1920, visited Australia as part of a deputation from the Society, and subsequently settled in New Zealand. |
