Born 24 feb 1834, at Merthyr Cynog, South Wales; studied at Western College; appointed to the Makolo Mission; ordained 5 Apr 1858 at Norley St. Chapel, Plymouth; married Isabella Slater; sailed 5 Jun 1858; arrived at Cape Town, 14 Jul 1858; arrived at Kuruman, 31 Dec 1858; left Kuruman, 8 Jul 1859; arrived at Linyati, Sekeletu's Town, 14 Feb 1860; set out from Linyati on 19 Jun to retrace steps southward, Mrs Price died on the way, 5 Jul; arrived at Kuruman, 14 Feb 1861; 23 Oct 1861 married Elizabeth Moffat, daughter of Dr R Moffat; being appointed to join the Matabele Mission, left Kuruman in early 1862; steps were taken as second attempt to establish a mission among the Makolo tribe but the scheme failed and he remained at Shoshong; Feb 1866 he proceeded to Logageng, Sechele's Town, with a view to resuming missionary work commenced in 1847 by David Livingstone; settled at Logageng in 1867; continued work at Logageng [Molepolole] until 5 Jan 1875; appointed by Directors to visit east coast of Africa with view to establishment of a route to and a mission at Ujiji, sailed for Zanzibar 18 Mar 1876 and arrived 2 May; appointed to conduct the expedition to Ujiji and arriving there the establishment of a mission on Lake Tanganyika, arrived at Zanzibar 31 May and set out 1 Aug for the Lake, but met with serious difficulties on way to Mpwapwa; 1879 returned to Molepolole; 1883-4, accompanied Foreign Secretary on deputational visit to North Bechuanaland and Matabeleland; 28 Jul 1884, appointed to succeed Mr Mackenzie as Tutor in the Moffat Institution and removed to Kuruman, Mar 1885; 1896 completed a new translation of Old Testament from the revised English version; died at Kuruman 21 Jan 1900. |
