description Incoming correspondence from missionaries in the province of Fukien [Fujian] to the London Missionary Society headquarters. Letters from Fukien district, 1845 to 1871, mainly emanate from Amoy [Xiamen] but display gradual expansion of the mission into rural areas and other towns, notably Changchow [Zhangzhou]. Principal correspondents are the brothers Alexander and John Stronach, William and Olivia Young, John Macgowan, Dr Julius Hirschberg, who ran a hospital for the LMS from 1853 to 1860, and William Lea, who trained trained Chinese evangelists and moved to run the station at Foochow [Fuzhou] in 1863.
