Groups include: village congregation; family on cart; group "watching the visitors". Other people include: old and young villagers and countrymen; famine victims; Arnold Bryson; shepherd (with flock); Greaves. Activities featured include: sweeping up grain; storing the hay; harvesting wheat; putting grain into bags; grinding corn; threshing millet and corn; winnowing corn; irrigation on the banks of the Grand Canal; ploughing; "Enjoying a meal"; mending an iron pot; grinding maize flour; fishermen mending nets; women making fishing nets; "Taking the birds for an airing"; carrying baskets of apples; crossing a stream by raft; travel by mule-cart (starting out, loaded up, losing a wheel), including on the road in winter, crossing a "perilous" bridge, and through floods; mule drinking on journey; brick making; stamping foundations. Other places or buildings featured include: village threshing floor; North China road in spring; sunken road; village and city streets; village inn; city wall and pagoda; Sienning [Xianning]; camel back gate; around the Nankow Pass [Nankouzhen], including marble gateway on the way; the Great Wall; fisherman's shrine on the sea shore; "on the way to the cave of the Crouching Tiger"; the gap, Kuling [Guling]; "old wooden bridge"; Siaochang Church. Also includes: small and tall millet and millet stalks; the Tsangchow [Cangzhou] Buggie; grave mounds and shrines; rock called "brother-in-law"; ox-cart; sun-dried bricks. Some prints taken during [Arthur] Chirgwin's visit, 1938.
