Summary: |
This series comprises photographic and other visual material (silver gelatin photographic prints, cartes de visite, postcards and cuttings) connected with the work of the London Missionary Society and also the Colonial [later Commonwealth] Missionary Society in the West Indies and British Guiana [Guyana]. Material has been kept in one sequence and has either been sorted into manageable units or kept in existing units where this is appropriate. The files have been arranged chronologically as far as possible, although individual files can cover large date ranges.
Items show individuals, groups, buildings and local scenes, featuring missionaries, local Christians, schools, etc. Particularly well represented are images of the life of John Smith, missionary buildings and members of the mission communities. Many of the photographs and captions refer to the legacy of slavery and anti-slavery movements and protagonists.
Note on place names:
Where possible, each place name is identified by a contemporary standard form (generally taken from Norman Goodhall 's 'A History of the London Missionary Society, 1895-1945') and also by a current modern standard form (generally taken from the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names) where this is different. The modern standard for British Guiana is Guyana; New Amsterdam, Berbice is New Amsterdam, East Berbice-Corentyne. Georgetown has been used in place of George Town.
