Summary: Concerning Mr Hodges. Regarding a letter received from a mixed race boy [described in the letter as a 'mullatto boy'], William Forgler Corner, who has been taken to Scotland as a servant, giving his personal history. Includes a transcription of a letter by Corner to his mother, dated 27 September 1809, who is enslaved on the Thomas Estate; the copy is in the handwriting of John Wray. The letter describes his experiences of life in Scotland, including attending school, and being recommended by Lady Abercromby to the Perth Society for Propagating the Gospel Among Heathen Nations [context note: Corner later became a missionary with the London Missionary Society in their South Africa mission, 1811-1821]. Fearful the Governor will prohibit him from teaching his Black congregation in the evenings. Also contains information about the farming cycle and periods of harvests and farmwork, about the weather and its effects on the harvest.
