Summary: |
Incoming correspondence from missionaries in the United Provinces to the London Missionary Society headquarters. The main stations of the mission to the United Provinces [Uttar Pradesh] were Benares [Varanasi] and Mirzapur, with the later addition of Almorah [Almora]. Principal early correspondents were Matthew Adam, William Buyers, John Shurman [Johann Schurmann]; James Kennedy, Robert Cotton Mather, Matthew Sherring, and John Budden. William Buyers and James Kennedy were married to sisters, Eliza and Margaret Walker. The period includes the events of the Indian Mutiny [Sepoy rebellion], also referred to as "India's First War of Independence", 1857, of which the letters show the effects on the people, mission stations, churches, missionaries and their families. |
