description |
Incoming correspondence from missionaries in the LMS Travancore district - modern Kerala, which saw great success in numbers of conversions. Both Tamil and Malayalam languages were widely spoken in this region. The main mission stations were Nagercoil, Neyyoor, Martandam, Quilon, Trivandrum [Thiruvananthapuram], Sauthapoonam [Santhapuram] and Pareychaley. Early correspondents include Charles Mault, Charles Mead, John Abbs, John Cox, Samuel Mateer, Frederick Baylis, James Duthie, Isaac Hacker and Ann Baylis Thomson. Large numbers of Indian staff were engaged over the years, and letters refer to their work and the LMS’s relationship with and responsibilities to them. In 1865 an area adjoining the boundary line between South Travancore and Tinnevelly [Tirunelveli] was ceded to the (epispcopalian) Society for Propagation of the Gospel - a fact reflected in the letters of the time. Letters also include some mention of mission to Ceylon.
