description Incoming correspondence from missionaries in the LMS Tamil district - modern Tamil Nadu; dominated by Madras city [Chennai] the chief city of India’s South-East coast. Other stations included Coimbatore, Salem, Chittoor, Tripassore [Tirupattur], Combaconam [Kumbakonam], Pursewaukum [Purasawalkam] and Madanapillay [Madanapalle]. Early correspondents include Edmund Crisp, William Taylor, William Drew, Ebenezer Lewis, William Addis, Alexander Leitch, John Lechler, George Hall and Goodeve Mabbs. Missionaries travelling to other fields sometimes sent letters upon arrival at the port of Madras although they were stationed in other missionary regions (e.g. Bengal, Ultra Ganges, China).
