Summary: Incoming correspondence from missionaries in the LMS Canarese district - modern Karnataka (previously Mysore); an area of central southern India with a coastal outpost at Belgaum. Early letters include those written by John Hands, who started work at Bellary in 1810 (letters in South India-General), and in 1819 began printing the Madras Scriptures in the Canarese [Kannada] language. Other early correspondents include Joseph Taylor, William Beynon, John Wardlaw, Benjamin Rice, and James Sewell. For the first part of the 19th century letters from Cuddapah are sometimes included in the Canarese district but mostly they appear among the Telugu. Up to 1840 the chief centre of mission remained Bellary but in that year a government grant of land in the main city Bangalore, and the beginning of the seminary there led to Bangalore predominating in the later part of the century. Belgaum remained a mission station where ministry was offered to British soldiers as well as to the Indian population.
