Summary: Attempts by the Missionary Society to found missions in the Americas were carried out early in the history of the Society. An abortive attempt to provide a mission to Buenos Aires failed in 1806, and from then on, work concentrated on North America. The successful mission to British Guiana (Guyana) in South America was administered as part of the West Indies field. From 1799 to 1816 there was a mission to Newfoundland, which subsequently spread to British North America. Rev John Hillyard was the first missionary sent out by the LMS to the area. A mission to Quebec and Montreal from 1800 to 1805 failed in part due to French influence. Work was carried out with the Catholics of New Brunswick from 1804, and also on Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. Up to 1814, the LMS attempted to carry out mission work amongst the indigenous population in America and the Canadian Provinces, but these attempts were generally unsuccessful. Missionaries carried out work amongst the colonial settlements, and often tended to become pastors of local churches, subsequently giving up mission work. Mission activity in the Americas was not a success for the London Missionary Society, and support was soon ended. Areas covered include: Newfoundland, South America, Bermuda, Cape Breton, Bahamas, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Canada and the United States of America.
